head of electricity construction,
Nicola started her career in local government, managing contaminated land remediation and industrial regeneration projects. After a time she moved on to regulating such projects in a senior role within a local authority planning department. Later she became involved in health and safety regulation and she remains a chartered health and safety enforcement officer.
Nicola joined National Grid in 2007 and led its Commercial Property Business. This involved delivering large capital projects to return former gasworks and gasholder sites to beneficial use, as well as the creation of joint ventures with housebuilders and other developers to maximise returns. She has also led Gas and Electricity Transmission Customer Connections and Electricity Market Change. In addition to shaping the commercial and technical frameworks that govern the electricity industry, the latter role saw her commence a comprehensive review of how transmission and distribution companies in the UK recover revenues and how the cost is apportioned between system users.
Since 2017, Nicola has been leading National Grid’s Electricity Construction team, delivering some of the nation’s most important major infrastructure projects to maintain the electricity transmission system and connect new generation that will deliver the UK’s net zero targets. Nicola is responsible for a portfolio of c.£15bn of complex major projects, in addition to c.£0.5bn annually of smaller projects.
Nicola is a passionate advocate of social mobility and works hard to create opportunities for young people from socially or economically disconnected backgrounds to realise their potential. Nicola lives in Warwickshire with her husband, Petr, and sons Petr and Tomas.
