Molecular Sciences is a flagship new-build facility for the University of Birmingham that provides a hub for the University’s Schools of Chemistry, and Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES). The 11,250m2 facility features sustainable laboratories with 171 high-efficiency fume cupboards, offices and flexible collaborative spaces. This project deserves to win because: - It is highly sustainable, achieving both EPC A (14) and BREEAM excellent rating - It has embraced SMART technology to engage end users, reduce energy consumption and support maintenance - The project team implemented rigorous processes to ensure efficient delivery, effective communication and strict health and safety adherence.
LPT Phase 2 is a great example of the mature, measured, proactive and collaborative approach by all parties, which is encouraged by the NEC contract, Project 13 Enterprise and HMJV’s “One Team, One Spirit” ethos which has been honed over three decades of successful on time, within budget infrastructure delivery on previous projects like CTRL 320 and Crossrail C310. The team have outperformed against project outcomes including betterment of programme delivery and budget – often a rarity in comparable major infrastructure schemes, as well as mitigating key project risks, driving safe and sustainable solutions and leaving a positive legacy.
Following a devastating fire which decimated the Christie’s cancer research facility in 2017, building work on the new Paterson Institute was successfully completed last year and has been officially handed over to the project stakeholders, Christie NHS Trust, Manchester University and Cancer Research UK. At 25,000 sq metres and 10-storeys high, the building is home to the largest concentration of scientists, doctors and nurses in Europe. 300 scientists and 400 clinicians and operational staff will deliver clinical trials covering the full extent of the patient pathway, from prevention and novel treatments to living with and beyond cancer.
Marylebone Square comprises 54 super-prime private, and 25 affordable homes plus retail, restaurant, and community facilities. Each home is accessed via one of 40 courtyard bridges across the five-storey central landscaped atrium. The complex envelope includes a hand-set load bearing terracotta façade and bespoke cast aluminium balustrading. Challenging logistics included constructing a 100m long triple basement with party wall adjacencies on a sensitive constrained site, along with top-down construction for part of the GF slab, and two cranes. A registered CCS UltraSite, the project was delivered safely, on time and on budget, and achieved BREEAM Excellent and CfSH 4.
Marshgate unites the arts, technology and science under one roof, enabling users to immerse themselves in innovative activities and cutting-edge research. The majestic building has the space and facilities to help solve some of the most pressing global challenges related to sustainability, climate change, technology transformation and health and wellbeing. As well as creating an environment where a truly collaborative spirit could thrive, the building needed to be robust, long-life and loose-fit, so that it could readily adapt to changing needs over time. The resulting building is both bespoke and adaptable, working seamlessly as part of the future masterplan.
The record-breaking project, Viking Link, is the world’s longest land and subsea interconnector, enabling the direct sharing of green energy between Great Britain and Denmark for the very first time. It plays a vital role meeting our net zero targets by sharing clean and affordable energy between the UK and Denmark, benefitting consumers in both countries for many years to come. Over 4 million hours worked and challenges through Brexit, COVID-19 and the Ukraine war – the project was delivered ahead of time and within budget which is a fantastic achievement.
HMP Fosse Way is celebrated for its innovative approach to rehabilitative design, with a strong focus on sustainability, prisoner rehabilitation, and community impact. This project excels as a pioneering MMC project, employing a HybriDfMA solution showcasing remarkable speed, safety, efficiency, and predictability. Its innovative rehabilitative design, standardisation, and digital integration ensures a predictable, sustainable solution, aligning with MoJ's Net Zero Carbon ambitions. Fosse Way pioneers social values with prisoner upskilling workshops, emphasising rehabilitation and reducing reoffending. Beyond construction, it leaves a lasting legacy through eco-friendly features, progressive prisoner facilities, and economic contributions, making it an exemplary model in modern construction.
Norton Folgate is a unique project because it delivered excellence at every vital touchpoint: Quality – through modern methods of construction, digital innovation and careful management of the complex mixture of renewal and new-build; Collaboration & values – a true one-team effort that delivered shared outcomes; Exceptional navigation of programme complexity – co-ordination across a significant network of suppliers, delivering intricate works; Customer satisfaction – delivery on British’s Land’s ambition to transform the area.; Community benefits – with project members even pitching in to remove shop-front graffiti. All this, delivered to time and budget makes it an exemplar project.
Delivered in just 28 months, College Road is a groundbreaking residential development in South London by offsite developer and contractor, Tide and its volumetric company Vision. The scheme delivers almost 1,000 homes across two adjoining buildings of 35 and 50 storeys, respectively. The 50-storey building is one of the largest co-living schemes in the world and the tallest volumetric modular building in Europe. Reaching 163m high, it is testament to the construction innovation led by Tide and Vision’s offsite expertise. College Road sets a historic milestone for Croydon, for volumetric construction, and for the way that we live in cities.
New Victoria, Manchester has created a vibrant new city-centre residential community, repurposing the area around the station. The team successfully navigated challenges including a Network Rail culvert under the constrained site and many complex interfaces. More than that our whole project team left a remarkable legacy of social value, generating extensive local employment opportunities, economic benefit, multi-level education activities, work placements, apprenticeships, training, and outreach to vulnerable groups, community and charity organisations. Most significantly we transformed site accommodation into a vital drop-in centre for homeless people over two festive periods, creating a transferable model for positive social impact.
The Bristol Beacon delivers its aspiration to be a world-leading concert venue. It was technically and fiscally challenging. The site was over 80 tennis courts in size, with hundreds of tonnes of rubble removed and recycled. The number of bricks required for the re-build measured over 21 miles if laid end-to-end, while the main hall’s ‘birdcage’ scaffolding structure was Europe's biggest. The team was in the public and political spotlight. They kept the customer on board throughout as the project changed enormously, epitomising the importance of a strong team ethos in successfully delivering a technically challenging, constantly evolving project.
