Peel Ports Group and Ecocem: Enabling Lower-Carbon Construction Across the UK
Peel Ports Group and Ecocem have built a strategic partnership that is helping to accelerate the decarbonisation of the UK construction sector by combining innovative low-carbon cement technologies with efficient, sustainable logistics.
Ecocem is Europe's leading provider of low-carbon cement solutions, supplying products that significantly reduce the embodied carbon of concrete. Its technologies include GGBS-based cementitious materials and ACT, a breakthrough cement technology capable of reducing cement-related CO₂ emissions by up to 70% while maintaining performance and cost competitiveness.
To support growing market demand, Peel Ports has invested in dedicated import, storage and distribution facilities for Ecocem at Runcorn in the North West and London Medway in the South East. These strategically located terminals provide reliable access to major construction markets including Greater Manchester, Liverpool, London and the wider South East, ensuring low-carbon materials are available at scale where they are needed most.
The partnership combines Ecocem's expertise in sustainable construction materials with Peel Ports' port-centric logistics model. By utilising marine transport, bulk handling infrastructure and efficient onward distribution networks, the collaboration reduces transport emissions, alleviates road congestion and strengthens supply chain resilience while improving the availability of lower-carbon construction materials.
Together, Peel Ports and Ecocem support the supply of low-carbon cementitious materials used on some of the UK's most significant infrastructure and construction projects, helping the industry reduce embodied carbon without compromising performance. Their partnership demonstrates how innovation in both materials and logistics can accelerate progress towards net zero and support the delivery of the next generation of housing, commercial developments and critical infrastructure across the UK.
